vSphere Configuration Backup is an automating tool for saving configurations of multiple ESXi and SQL databases.

  • For vCSA backups : Ensure that your windows firewall is open on port 21 for inbound FTP access
  • For ESXi backups : Install vSphere CLI (not the same as vSphere PowerCLI !) and login/logout (or you may experience libxml.dll errors)
  • For SQL backups : Make sure you have SQLCMD.EXE somewhere (it’s part of SQL Server binaries and should be somewher in programe files)



  • Run “Configuration manager.exe” to configure all the settings
  • Add your vCenter Server Appliance servers
  • Add your ESXi servers
  • Select SQL databases to backup
  • Set the backup folder and retention then close the manager
  • Create a scheduled task in Windows to run “ESXi Configuration Backup.exe” or run it manually
